The transition from Salmon to Steelhead season is underway, and some of the most exciting fishing of the fall is just getting started! As the cooler temperatures arrive and the fall rains bring changing river conditions, Steelhead begin moving into West/Northern Michigan’s rivers giving anglers opportunity to hook into some incredible fish! Whether you’re a seasoned angler or looking to land your first steelhead, now is the time of year to get your guided fishing trip on the calendar!
How we target fall steelhead:
At Northern Rivers Outfitters, we adjust our tactics to match water levels, clarity, temperature, and fish movement. Here are some of the tactics you’ll experience on a guided fishing trip with us:
- Bead Fishing- We use beads that imitate salmon eggs. Steelhead are actively feeding on spawning salmon eggs drifting throughout the river. Matching bead size and color to water clarity and conditions makes a huge difference.
- Float Fishing- Drifting spawn, beads, skein or other productive presentations beneath a float allows us to cover runs, seams, and deeper water while maintaining a very natural presentation.
- Spawn Bags-Fresh bags can be a great option when the fish are actively feeding- particularly in good travel lanes.
- Fly Fishing-For anglers that love the fly rod, we use techniques such a nymphing with egg patterns and other subsurface flies, adjusting weight and depth to get the fly into the correct strike zone.
Our guides read the water each day/hour of the day to adjust as needed. Steelhead don’t hold in every part of the river. We focus on current seams, deeper pools, travel lanes, and softer water where fish are resting.
