Michigan Trout Season is Here!

See a blip from NRO guide Leo Cook‘s 4/21/26 River Report showcasing that we are officially starting up summer trout season: “Hope all is well. It has been a heck of a steelhead season on the Pere Marquette River with lots of rain. The river is finally level off and actually dropping nicely in the upper sections with a nice tea stain to the water. There are still some steelhead around, but are thinning out as we end the season of an incredible spring steelhead run. I will be guiding for steelhead for a few more days and then switching over to start up trout season on the Pere Marquette river! The trout are fat and happy right now, gorging on steelhead eggs and salmon fry. I’m looking forward to this transition from steelhead to trout this year. Last years trout season was epic and from this year should be as well. Streamers and lure fishing will be great through the rest of April and into May. We should start to see excellent dry fly fishing going into the middle of May and all the way through June.”

Guided Streamer Fishing Trips:

Spring and summertime streamer fishing can be a RIOT! Michigan trout opener is April 25th for 2026 and anglers gear up from all over to hit the season in full force! One of the most common methods for targeting trout is by using streamers. Streamer fishing is all about triggering the fishes natural instinct! Our fly fishing guides teach anglers how to use big strips to mimic fry swimming naturally in the water. The Pere Marquette is an excellent streamer fishing river due to its structure made up of woody debris and down trees, providing excellent trout habitat. Streamer fishing is ideal all summer long but can get extremely good going into the fall when the trout get more aggressive going into their spawning season. These fish are predators and when stripping a streamer through their territory youre enticing an aggressive bite! Our guides are resident experts knowing where many of the Pere Marquette’s massive brown trout reside. They give anglers excellent opportunities to come home with huge smiles after hooking up with these river monsters. Streamer fishing isn’t just effective, its addictive! It turns a quiet day on the river into a hunt, where every cast has the potential to connect with the biggest fish in the system.

Guided Hex Hatch Trips and Dry Fly Fishing Trips:

See our resource here for Michigan’s Fly Fishing Hatch Chart. The resource shows by river and month which fly hatches are going on. Our guides know this knowledge like the back of their hand and use their expert knowledge to teach and give their tips and tricks to anglers booking trips with them. The guides all have a very healthy selection of flies and nymphs made up and bring with them on each trip to mimic what is landing on the water to entice the fish to eat their natural food sources. Dry fly fishing is best in Months May and June but can be done all throughout the summer! The summertime dry fly fishing in Michigan that stands out to most anglers is the Hendrickson and Hex hatches. If you’ve never booked a hex hatch guided fishing trip, this is your year to cross this phenomenon off your bucket list. The hatches in the air are THICK and the fish are extremely eager to feed during these time frames. Guided Hex hatch fishing trips can also be extremely unique and fun due to their timing. Our guides suggest to the angler later start times to get the most out of their customers trip. The dry fly fishing trips are the most versatile type of guided trip we offer! The guides will typically do a few hours of streamer fishing during the afternoon, and then switch over to dry flies as it gets later into the evening and the flies start landing on the water. The anglers usually get an hour or two of extremely fun dry fly fishing and if they plan to stay out after dark, anglers get to try yet another tactic-mousing!

Guided Mousing Trips:

Fly fishing using mouse patterns is one of favorite types of fishing to do on guide trips. Most anglers have never done this and our guides are expert! Fly fishing using mice is one of the most exhilarating ways to target big trout! Unlike using dry flies that mimic small insects, mice mimic small animals struggling to get across the river. On rivers like the Pere Marquette, large brown trout are very opportunistic feeders and see these struggling ‘mice’ as a protein filled meal! Typically the takes are very explosive due to the size of the trout feeding naturally on larger prey. The best time to mouse is after dark. If you are looking for a mousing trip typically our guides will head out at 4pm so anglers get 3 types of fly fishing in: streamer fishing, dry fly fishing, and then mousing! This package is a huge bang for your buck!
